Q. Do you use Genetically Engineered Ingredients (GEIs) in your products?

The use of Genetically Engineered Ingredients (GEIs) is an issue of paramount importance facing the natural and organic food industry. At the Hain Celestial Group, we are taking steps to respond to growing consumer awareness and concern about the presence of GEIs in food.

All organic products are produced without the use of GEIs, and our goal wherever possible is to do the same for our natural products (those that are not organic). To ensure that all ingredients and processing aids meet these standards, we employ a variety of methods, from DNA testing to obtaining documentation from our ingredient suppliers.

As no state or federal regulations currently require the labeling of foods containing GEIs, we are working proactively to help consumers identify products made without the use of GEIs. All of our organic products are in compliance with USDA standards and we are in the process of updating the labels on our natural products to indicate their non-GEI status. The time involved in verifying the GEI status of ingredients and updating the labels will vary by product.

The prevalence of genetically engineered crops in the environment, as well as the increased use of GEIs, has made it nearly impossible to avoid the possibility of trace amounts of genetically engineered material in some foods. This prevents us, as well as other manufacturers, from making any statements that guarantee products to be 100% free of genetically engineered material.
